The last week we have
been making our way along one of the most famous cycling
routes in the world along the Donau or Danube as it’s known
in English. It’s been another fun week and we have camped
every night through Austria. The weather has been extremely
unpredictable and we have had everything from hot sunny days
to headwinds and big thunderstorms.
The route along the Danube has been very
scenic with nice villages, castles and churches and Vienna
was really impressive but there are parts along the route
with power stations and industry too. Not sure what was
wrong with the Austrians we met along the way, maybe it was
the weather but we found the locals pretty grumpy to us and
each other.
Luckily though we met some great characters
from other countries who were cycling the Danube as part of
longer trips around Europe. This has been really nice and
we could share our experiences with them and get some great
tips and inspiration.
Two characters we met were Rob and Gav, 19
year old English lads from Barnsley, who had flown to
Holland, bought fold up bikes from Rotterdam and then just
started cycling across Europe with their back pack strapped
to the bikes. With a combination of cycling and train they
had made their way to Austria and plan to cycle their
customised one geared bikes as far as they can get. Check
out the photo, their bikes are by far the funniest we’ve
seen so far!
Yesterday we cycled the last 83 KM to
Bratislava the capital of Slovakia. We were very excited to
cross the border into Eastern Europe and were amazed with
the sudden difference of architecture, culture and warm
welcoming, and friendly people. Bratislava is by far the
most interesting and fun place on the journey so far. |
