TRAVELLING THROUGH KARNATAKA - 9TH JANUARY 2010

we have spent the last week travelling south through the state of Karnataka by both bus and train and then cycling when we get to our destination. We have had some crazy experiences so far. We first took the sleeper bus to the amazing temple city of Hampi. The bus was a terrifying but fun 12 hour roller coaster ride.  It was quite hard to sleep, the roads are full of holes of course and you feel each one. Not to mention the swaying of the suspension and the bus driving flat out all night. We had high expectations but Hampi didn’t let us down, it really is a laid back paradise with fantastic scenery and nature.

We then took the train overnight via Bangalore the capital of Karnataka to the flamboyant city of Mysore with its palace and one of the most colourful markets we’ve seen. The train was just as fun as the night bus and although we got a little bit of sleep there is always someone snoaring nearby. The train was basic and dusty too. One English girl had to scrub the dirt off her bed for about ten minutes and it still wasn’t clean. There were also mice running around the carriage. We then changed to Mysore and were lucky to be next to an Indian family who sang Indian songs all the way, it was so impressive and we could not have paid for a better three hours of entertainment.

We have taken our bikes on different transport but the best so far was the little round boat we found in Hampi. We also once ended up accidentally cycling on the Mumbai – Bangalore highway so we just folded up the bikes and jump in a Tuk Tuk to escape the traffic.
