Tonight we are writing this
update from a small but comfy hotel room near the airport in
Dehli after flying up here from Chennai on the east coast of
Tamil Nadu. It’s just an overnight stop, in the morning
we’ll board another plane that will take us up into the
Himalayas. It’s already 10 degrees cooler here, the last
week travelling across South India it has been a humid 35
degrees in the shade so we feel quite relieved to have our
energy back again.
After the amazing nature of
Kerala we headed back into Tamil Nadu for the third time on
this trip. Every state in India is like a different country.
They each have their own languages and culture and just like
in Europe you can feel and see the difference immediately.
Tamil Nadu is old India. The history can be seen in its
magnificent temples and the traditional life of the people.
The poverty, pollution, and frustratingly different habits
of people have been challenging and confronting especially
when you don’t have the stunning nature to distract you from
it.
For the most part of the
journey we took a/c taxis across the state, which were a bit
expensive but we feel it was worth it to escape the
pollution and heat. However, it was still scary as the
locals have no idea how to use a motorway and we had trucks,
rickshaws and motorbikes coming along on the wrong side of
the road dangerously playing chicken with us. The highlights
in Tamil Nadu have been the huge temple complex in the city
of Madurai and eating real French croissants in Pondicherry
after too many days of Indian breakfast. Now after two and a
half months in India we are ready for somewhere cooler and
slightly less hectic so we are excited to be flying up to
Nepal in the morning |
