When travelling you sometimes get greedy for experiences and
this is definitely the case when travelling in Turkey.
Looking through the huge guidebook there are so many places
to visit, especially in the east of Turkey. However, with
only 3 weeks left before flying back to Amsterdam we decided
that the distances in east Turkey were just too vast and it
would be a bit chilly for us. On top of this Simon’s bike
was having a couple of problems. We decided to limit the
cycling to minimum and head to Istanbul and find a nice
place to relax with rooftop terrace.
To break up the journey we took a bus from Cappdocia to
Safranbolu in the Black sea region. Safranbolu as its name
suggests is famous for the growing and trading of saffron,
it is also one of the most well preserved Ottoman towns and
a world heritage site. It is really beautiful and peaceful
there but a bit like living in a museum so after a few days
we were ready to move on again.
Arriving in Istanbul we had no idea how to get from the bus
station to the centre and on top of that it was raining
hard, As usual it just so happened there was a guy with a
small pickup truck waiting to give us a lift with our new
friends from the bus Cindy and Ken from the US. Then it
turned out that Ken and Cindy had met a guy who had
apartments for rent right in the centre of Sultanahmet with
the best rooftop terrace in Istanbul. It’s so strange how as
long as you have a clear vision, no expectations, stay
positive and believe things will work out, they always do.
We’ve had a great time here in Istanbul. We’ve walked a lot,
seen a lot, did Yoga classes, read books, watched films, and
ate far too much Baklava. We have just 2 days left of our 7
month adventure and then in just 4 small hours will be back
in Holland. That feels really strange but It will be great
to see friends and family again before flying off on a new
adventure in India. |
