TURKEY - WELL LITTLE BRITAIN ACTUALLY!! - 22nd SEPTEMBER 2009

Nearly 3 months ago we arrived back in Turkey after 6 years away. We were both really excited to reach a country we know so well and look on it with fresh eyes. The plan was to stay and work for July and August, the hottest months of the year, then after continue to explore by bicycle. We had a job lined up with a small independent tour operator that Simon worked for in 2001 and 2002.

After a couple of days meeting old friends and new colleagues we headed on to the area of Fethiye where we were to be stationed. This is one of the most scenic areas of Turkey with its mountains and pine trees. Our home was up at 400m in a small village called Hisaronu colonized by British package holiday tourists.

Our job would be to collect the tourists from the airport by bus and take them to their hotel in case they got lost. Give them an information meeting about the area and try to sell them excursions that they can buy cheaper locally. Then hang around the hotel at convenient times so that they can come and complain; an important part of being on a package holiday! Most of the tourists we met were very nice and friendly. However, with Turkey still being a cheap country for the Brits it attracts strange aggressive zombie like people that shouldn’t really be allowed to have a passport.

Outside work we have had a lot fun, we made some good friends, explored the local beaches and history and escaped down to the town of Fethiye and experienced real Turkish culture and food. This has given us a taste of what we might expect as we travel
